Expansion?

For those that live in a cave (in which you're probably not reading this, whatever), the NCAA is discussing two major changes to the tournament:

1. Expanding to 96 teams
2. Awarding the TV contract to ESPN

These two things are not mutually exclusive. Behind closed doors, ESPN execs are probably saying something like, "look, we'll double what CBS pays you for TV rights, but you gotta give us 32 more teams so we have more games to air and so even the casual fan who only watches college hoops in March can hate Dick Vitale too".

And here we are, this seems to be an immovable force that will happen. Label me disappointed. Not only will this dilute the quality of the tournament, but it will devalue the regular season (and I watch a lot of regular season college hoops).

Hopefully everyone will come to their senses and realize the tourney is about as perfect as it can get right now, but when this money is involved we know what usually wins out.
